Devils Garden

After Lower Calf Creek Falls I headed down the “Hole In The Rock Road”. This dirt road heads south from UT-12 just outside of the town of Escalante 62 miles to Lake Powell and is the route Mormon pioneers used as they headed for the Colorado River to colonize the southeastern portion of Utah.

At the intersection with UT-12 there was a road sign saying “Road Closed” which was due to the recent storms washing out parts of the road. I hoped I would be able to reach Devils Garden, 12 miles down the road. I had no problem traveling down the road, but it was obvious that this area would have been pretty scary under those conditions, with signs of flash flooding all the way.

I spent a couple of hours hiking through the formations before heading back to camp for the evening. Many of the hoodoos reminded me of a gathering of gnomes.
