Utah Lake

I had to run some errands in Provo and decided to grab my camera as I headed out the door. I thought I would be prepared if I came across anything interesting. Just like the Boy Scouts motto…”Be Prepared”. So here is a short series I shot from the western shores Utah Lake. Many of the photos are views across the lake towards Provo with Mt. Timpanogos and Mt. Nebo towering above.

After taking care of what I needed to do in Provo, I decided to take the drive around Utah Lake to have a look. I had previously researched on Google Earth and knew I would find at least a couple of good spots on the west shore. What I didn’t realize was just how big Utah Lake actually is. It is close to 100 miles to drive around the whole lake!

Utah Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the United States west of the Mississippi River and occupies one-fourth of the Utah Valley floor, south of Salt Lake City. Like its sister, the Great Salt Lake, it is a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville which covered much of North America’s Great Basin region.

The harsh light of midday is not the best time for landscape photography. But what I found was beautiful turquoise waters reflecting snow covered high peaks, cattails in an intimate bay and a couple of great spots to shoot sunrises. Now I need to do a bit of searching for sunset locations on the east shore.

  1. I love these shots!!!! The water looks so beautiful, and the mountains in the back look massive when viewed with nothing infront of them, if that makes sense?? lol
