A New Dawn At The Lake

A new day dawns at The Great Salt Lake…We arose early with the intentions of catching the magic hour at the lake… and then climb the high point on Antelope Island. Frary Peak at 6,596′ is not by any means an alpine climb. But from the trailhead, you do gain over 2,000′ of elevation. The views of The Great Salt Lake, surrounding mountains and other islands is outstanding!

We made it to the causeway leading out to the island as the first light began to color the sky. The morning was very breezy with very few clouds except those that hung to the high altitude peaks of the Wasatch Front Range. It was a pretty sunrise with pink, orange, blues and purples painting the sky. But not much in the way of drama due to the lack of clouds.

After the sunrise we made our way to the Frary Peak trailhead. We had hoped for a nice warm day to hike the peak and possibly stay to catch the full moon rising over the lake after dark. But as many good intentioned plans go, we were thwarted by a very strong and persistent wind that cut to the bone. The island has almost no trees to speak of, so you are exposed to the elements with very little to give shelter.

After making it about half way up the peak, we turned and headed back down. I used the opportunity to get some interesting telephoto abstract images of the lake from a perspective high above the lake not often seen.
