The Fire Wave

After a good nights rest and free buffet breakfast at the La Quinta in Page, we were back on the road headed for the Valley Of Fire State Park in Nevada.

We elected to not take the fastest route since we felt we had plenty of time to make it to the Valley Of Fire by the golden hour. We decided to take 89A which passes by the Navajo Bridge over the Colorado River, the nearby Vermillion Cliffs and then on past the road to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

This put us into the Valley Of Fire with just enough time to make the hike out to the Fire Wave for the golden hour. The timing was just right to get the warm glow of the sun low on the horizon. But I found it difficult to compose the Fire Wave due to its location and the surroundings. All the best vantage points were elevated and looking down on the formation making it hard to isolate. That and all the other people walking into the frame was a bit frustrating!

It was a pleasant hike out to The Fire Wave, but I had unfortunately built up higher expectations of what I could artistically capture at this location. It was the first time visiting this park and we were genuinely impressed. Wishing we had planned for more time here for exploration. Guess we’ll just have to come back again someday!

Once the sun had set we made our way to the north end of Las Vegas where we spent the last night in a hotel for this trip.

Tomorrow we enter The Valley Of Death…
