Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

The morning started out with a bit of frustration with the online tickets we bought for the Jungfraujoch. But once we took a train to the next station down, they knew exactly how to handle it and we were on our way…

The Jungfraujoch (Top Of Europe as it is called) is another of these incredible engineering feats sitting high up on a rocky perch on the saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. It overlooks the Aletschgletcher (Aletsch Glacier), the largest glacier in the Alps. To reach the Jungfraujoch, we took a train from Grindelwald to the mountain pass station of Kleine Scheidegg. Then transferred to the Jungfrau Line which takes you to the top via a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch! There is a stop at Eigerwand where you can get off the train and walk a corridor to windows looking out halfway up the North Face! Over the years these portals have been used by rescue parties assisting mountaineers in trouble. Then re-board the train to reach the Jungfraujoch Railway Station, the highest in Europe. The tunnel construction was completed in 1912.

We had an amazing time enjoying the jaw dropping views, walking the glacier ice caves and reading up on some of the history of the building of it.

We rested up after the excursion and Harmony went to the local post office to ship a box of gifts and souvenirs we had accumulated back home.

Then had a casual dinner out before settling in for the night.

Tomorrow should be intense… The Eiger Trail.
