Lac Blanc
Another big day! We caught an 8:19 am bus up to Les Praz so we could be on the first gondola at the La Flégère lift. Minutes later we were high above the valley starting what for us would be a very difficult hike… What is said to be a classic in Chamonix, the trail to Lac Blanc.
The hike is on the opposite side of the valley from Mont Blanc and the trail provides amazing views of all the mountains above Chamonix the entire way! It is completely above tree line in an alpine setting.
After a short downhill from the top of La Flégère, it is a grueling mostly steep climb up to the lake. At points after reaching the top of a steep switchback section, only to see more steep switchbacks, I began to think I would not make it. But thanks to Harmony’s encouragement, we kept at it slowly trudging upward, finally reaching the lake after 3 hours.
The lake still had some ice in it from the previous winter. But reflection views could still be had of the spectacular peaks across the valley. We picked out our little spot on some rocks on the shoreline and enjoyed the views and our lunch before heading slowly back down the mountain.
Tired, sore and sweaty we made it back to the Airbnb and enjoyed cooling off with cold showers.
This would be our last night here in Chamonix. Tomorrow we will be back in Switzerland and off to Zermatt…
