Matterhorn

Matterhorn

Being pretty hammered from the schedule we’ve been keeping, we slept in till 8:30 am. Had a pretty nice hotel breakfast and headed out to find the underground funicular railway to Sunnegga…

The day dawned perfectly clear with not a cloud to be seen from the Zermatt valley. We managed to figure out the free bus service in town and reached the funicular around 11:00am. Off we went up through furnicular tunnel to the start of the days hike at Sunnega… The 5 lakes hike. Although the 5 Lakes Hike is supposed to be another of the classics in Zermatt, we shortened it to the 3 lakes hike to cut the mileage down as we were getting a late start.

Seeing the Matterhorn has been near the top of my bucket list for most of my life. I became fascinated by the pyramid shaped mountain as a kid on the classic ride at Disneyland. I recall seeing the climbers scale the peak adorned in traditional lederhosen.

It was a beautiful sunny day hike and the Matterhorn was out in all her glory, always towering above…
