Zermatt to Thun

Realizing that we were over-ambitious in our itinerary, we decided to change up our plans a bit… We had originally planned to stay in Zermatt another day to make the hike to the Hornli Hut (start of the classic Hornli Ridge climb on the Matterhorn), but the gondola to the start of the hike was closed. Then the day from Zermatt to Grindelwald would have included: Train to Thun, tour Old Towne Thun, boat tour on Thunersee (Lake Thun) to Interlaken West, bus to Interlaken East and then train to Grindelwald. All this would have put us into Grindelwald at 8:30pm! After thinking it through, it just didn’t really seem very realistic… So, all things considered, we decided to leave Zermatt a day earlier than planned and head to Old Towne Thun.

Unfortunately the train from Zermatt to Visp had some technical difficulties and broke down on the tracks. So they transferred all the passengers to the working cars but we ended up missing the scheduled transfer to Thun and had to wait an hour for the next train… No big deal. we would still have all afternoon tour Old Towne Thun.

While waiting in Visp, Harmony called the hotel and arranged for an early check in. The room was really really nice (the best we had stayed in the whole trip!) and had great AC which was welcome in the humid heat outside.

We rested a bit in the hotel room and then ventured out for some sightseeing of Old Towne. It had a very charming atmosphere, cobblestone streets with an awesome castle and church on the hill.

Hot and tired, again we retired to our room before heading out for dinner…
