Here is a short but sweet series I shot out at the lake in the same area as the last. But this has a quite different feel to it. As all but the waters edge sand was covered by snow from recent storms. I had just picked up Taylor at the airport and thought since the timing was right for a sunset that we would head over to Saltair and have a look. It was bitter cold with temps around 15º and a steady breeze that cut to the bone. We bundled up, put on our snow boots and headed out. The shots with snow in the foreground capture a feel of a barren arctic wasteland, not too far from the truth on this particular day! The high salinity of The Great Salt Lake makes it highly improbable for it to ever freeze, even during the coldest winters! The inversion in the Salt Lake Basin, caused by warm air forcing the cold frozen air/pollution to be trapped by the surrounding mountains, provided for a fantastic colorful and misty sunset. But as the sun set below the horizon, the cold sent us hightailing it back to the car.
You’re right, it does look like the Arctic – cold! Nice light reflections.
