This is the first of 4 posts I will be putting up here from our week long fall tour of Southwest Colorado on our Harley Davidson Road Glide…
To La Sal – Day 1
We left our home in Midvale at 11:30am to time our arrival in Moab close to dinner. The ride was going to be the longest daily milage of the entire trip… About 265 miles.
Our adventure… To ride the Harley down through the southwestern portion of Colorado. Through one of the prettiest parts of the state, the San Juan Mountains. With a trip by the Four Corners area to visit Mesa Verde National Park.
The ride today was tiring. Especially the stretch from Price, UT to where UT191 heads south off of I-70. It was hot and arduous out across the long straight highway… And we just settled in with the jams steaming into the Cardo bluetooth communication system I had installed into our new helmets.
Pushing the refueling a bit too close, we arrived at the first gas station in Moab with the Harley showing 13 miles till empty! Should have gassed up in Green River…
We stopped at the City Market to pick up a couple of supplies for the following day and then went to one of our favorite eateries in Moab… The Moab Brewery. And dang I will tell you it was hard to not have one of their tasty cold brews! But not really a good idea to mix that with riding a fully loaded Harley!
After the delicious dinner, we made our way south on UT191 to UT46 where we started east just on the southern end of the La Sal Mountains. The riding was very enjoyable, with cooler temperatures and a nice twisty road.
14 miles down UT46 we reached our first nights destination, The Mount Peale Animal Sanctuary. A beautifully rustic place. The hosts were very friendly and our room had a nice little deck patio that we enjoyed relaxing on as the sun set behind the La Sal Mountains.
Telluride – Day 2
We were up at 8am at the Peale Sanctuary… Brewed up a pot of coffee in the wonderful kitchen and Harmony scrambled me up some eggs with an English Muffin. Pretty nice start to the day!
The weather looked to be very pleasant for our ride over to Telluride. About a 2 hour ride…
We made frequent stops to view the scenery which got prettier and more colorful as we entered Colorado.
We arrived in Telluride at 1:30, well before check-in time, but Harmony was able to get us in early. Allowing us lots of time to check out the local shops and ride the free gondola to amazing views above the town.
After dinner in town, we grabbed some baked goods for breakfast and made our way back to the hotel for the night where we relaxed and watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade… For those who are familiar with my adventures… Very fitting!
The Delores River Canyon – Day 3
We left Telluride just after 8 in a light rain with our rain gear donned. The rain was not too bad but got a little heavy at times making it a bit difficult to see through the beaded up windshield and helmet visor.
The color was absolutely beautiful though! We had definitely timed the fall change right on! Breath taking! We stopped numerous times for photos but mostly just pushed on through the light rain down the Delores River Canyon. I had forgotten just how beautiful it was!
