My passion for landscape photography was seeded at an early age. I was inspired by the great wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains that my parents shared with me. We lived in California and frequently backpacked into Yosemite, John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness, and Desolation Valley around Lake Tahoe. My father at the time was an avid photographer and always carried his gear on these trips.
I got my first camera during this time in the late 1960’s, a little Kodak Instamatic point and shoot. And I recall enjoying taking photos on vacation trips with the family. Some of these early photos I still have, stored away in the old archived photo albums.
As a teen in Connecticut, my interest in photography grew, and I began using my father’s film SLR to shoot landscapes on day hikes through the New England countryside. Eventually I purchased my own Pentax K1000 SLR in the late 1970’s. It was with this camera that I really learned the use of manual exposure settings.
Just out of high school in 1981, I moved to Colorado where I actively became involved with mountaineering. In the high peaks of Colorado I followed my two great passions, mountaineering and landscape photography. Always carrying my heavy camera gear to document my adventures in the wilderness.
I acquired my first digital camera in the mid 1990’s. This camera only captured a mere 2 megapixels and the image quality was horrendous. But I did use it to document several extensive sea kayaking expeditions throughout Alaska.
In 2010 I moved to Utah and found new inspirations in photographing intimate compositions of slot canyons and wide vistas of the desert southwest.
I have gained a deep love and respect for the landscapes I photograph from the lifelong teachings of Mother Nature. Landscape photography not only gives me the opportunity to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, but leads me to find the amazing and intricate details of our natural world.
The personal rewards I get from being creative and artistic are truly meaningful to me. From the vision out in the field when capturing the image in camera, to the post processing that brings the raw image to life. It is the whole experience from start to finish that puts the wind in my sails.
I hope in some way, you find inspiration and enjoyment from my images…
