Day 9
Sligachan Bridge/Fairy Pools/ Talisker
We were out of camp at 7:30 hoping to beat most of the crowds to the Fairy Pools.
On the way we stopped in Sligachan to photograph the Old Bridge. Built in the early 1800’s. Local lore claims that submerging your face in the River Sligachan beneath the bridge for seven seconds and letting it dry naturally grants eternal beauty bestowed by the faeries. Unfortunately I had forgotten this myth. Guess I’ll just have to make due with what I have.
The drive in to the Fairy Pools was beautiful with moody clouds and dappled light breaking through the clouds.
Upon arrival at the parking area, the atmosphere was amazing as would hold true for the entire time we were there. It was truly a magical experience with amazing light. Dark moody clouds shrouding the mountain tops. But breaking up enough to cast light rays down from the heavens. I picked several areas to do some proper photography with my tripod and neutral density filters.
It was a very enjoyable experience even with all the people. Not too difficult to find compositions without the crowds in them. And on the hike out, Harmony went for a brave swim with the faeries in one of the deep pools!
Then onto Carbost where we had booked a tour of the Talisker Distillery. We arrived about an hour early, which gave us time to have a fish and chips lunch at the Three Chimneys restaurant across the street. It was interesting to learn how the Scotch whiskey is distilled at the oldest distillery on the Isle Of Skye founded in 1830. We finished the tour with a tasting of several variants… Yum! Of course our designated driver did not partake, after all it was hard enough to stay on these single-track roads!
After the tour and customary swag shopping, we headed for our camp for the next five nights in Portee.
Tomorrow will be a rest day for us. Probably not a whole lot of rest but give us time to sleep in and get some camp chores done…
