Blackness Castle/Midhope/Rosslyn Chapel/Melrose Abbey

The Great Scottish Adventure

Day 18
Blackness Castle/Midhope/Rosslyn Chapel/Melrose Abbey

It was a big day with four stops and quite a bit of driving…

We started at Blackness Castle which was a pretty awesome and a location used in the Outlander series. The 15th century fortress stands on a rocky spit on the south shore of the Firth of Forth.

Then onto Midhope Castle (also known as Lollybroch in the Outlander series). Harmony especially enjoyed this location! Fun to see what we have seen so many times on the series in person.

From Midhope we drove to the Rosslyn Chapel. The Gothic architecture was absolutely amazing! And the inside probably even more so! Unfortunately they do not allow any photography inside.

The final stop was an hours drive south to the Melrose Abbey ruins. The scale was pretty mind blowing! The Cistercian Monestery was originally built in 1146. And the heart of Robert the Bruce (my 19th great-grandfather) is buried here and marked with a small plaque! Robert the Bruce, was the King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. He is considered to be a Scottish national hero. He led Scotland during the first of the Wars of Scottish Independence against England to regain Scotland’s place as an independent nation.

From Melrose, it was an hour drive back north to our final camp at Mortonhall for the next two nights.

I have chosen to process this series of photos as monochrome. Just seems to fit the subjects.

Tomorrow, a big day in Edinburgh…
