Kilt Rock/Duntulm Castle

The Great Scottish Adventure

Day 12
Kilt Rock/Duntulm Castle

We slept in and got a late start at 10:00, knowing it would be an easier day. The rain was chucking it down all night and continued throughout the day. So we
decided to forego a couple of the locations as they were not high on the priority list, and would have required longer hikes through the rain.

North on the A855 we traveled up to Kilt Rock and the Mealt Falls, which drops 180 feet from the cliffs into the sea. A quick couple of pictures in the sideways rain and we were off.

Onto the Duntulm Castle ruins… Originally built in the 14th century, it is now very decrepit and not much is left. It sits in a pretty amazing location at the northern tip of the Isle of Skye, perched on the cliffs edge above the sea!

After that we stopped at a cute little coffee shop and met a hobbit (or so she said) that lived next door in a grass roofed hobbit hole.

We returned to camp for an afternoon nap before heading back into Portree for dinner at the Tongadale Hotel.

We had our first experience with Cullen Skink (a light chowder like fish soup with potatoes). It was delicious! And tried their Haggis Bon Bons. Not bad, but very different. Knowing what the ingredients are, it would not be at the top of my list to order! But being a Scottish national dish, we had to try it. Dinner was rounded off with Haddock and chips. Can’t go wrong with that in Scotland!

Back to camp for the night. A big day of hiking is planned for tomorrow. Hopefully we can manage the predicted rain okay…
