The Great Scottish Adventure
Day 13
The Quiraing
Up at 6am, out of camp at 7am. Headed straight to The Quiraing. Rainy, windy and in the clouds with little visibility. A true Scottish adventure!
Arriving at the car park, we donned our rain gear, warm coats and gloves and started out into the driving rain. A half mile in comes a small waterfall obstacle that must be crossed by climbing right through the falling water on the steep slick rocks.
The ever present cute little sheep were always grazing nearby and sometimes standing guard right in the middle of the trail.
The landscape was otherworldly beautiful, that is, what we could see of it! We continued up past rock formations called The Prison and The Needle, mostly hidden in the foggy clouds.
Then when the elevation gain began to ease off, we rounded a corner directly into the wind and driving rain. Impossible to see any of the landscape now, Harmony asked what is the point of hiking this if we can’t see anything? I agreed, disappointed, but you get what you get. Can’t control the weather.
We turned around and made our way back. Stopping from time to time to attempt to take some moody photos. Soaked on the outside but our rain gear was doing its job and keeping us dry on the inside.
The Quiraing had been another of my bucket list photography locations on this trip. Photos that I had seen of the area under more favorable conditions were amazing. Guess I’ll just have to leave this one on the list for another time!
After the hike we returned to Portree, fueled up the campervan and headed for camp.
Exhausted and famished we made some sandwiches and went to bed for an afternoon nap…
